Event Description

Join Museum members and the community in a book club discussion of Melanie Holmes’ fourth book, The Secret Life of Postcards: Tracing Art & History Through One Woman’s Collection. This book covers the golden age of postcards (about 1905 through the 1930s), using the collection of Elsie Costigan Lemenager, who was Melanie’s grandmother.

Postcards of that period were rich in symbolism and art, and they were also used to promote new ideas about the world around us. Most importantly, postcards are the first-person narrative of history, and this collection, pertains specifically to Kankakee County and Northeast Illinois Region, as well as postcards sent from a soldier boy serving in WWI (who would marry Elsie Costigan and become Melanie’s grandfather).

Melanie Holmes will join this book club discussion and will develop questions in advance of February 18th. Once you register, then watch your email for book club questions (about a week in advance of February 18th.) Books are available for purchase in the museum bookstore.
