As part of the ongoing Fifth Avenue Revitalization Project, the Ward 5 Kids Funfest held on August 30th, 2025, will be a joyful celebration of youth, community, and growth. Hosted at the 5th Avenue Community Garden—an initiative led by teen changemaker Ty’Anna Helbert and supported by the Youth Empowerment Initiative, 76010 Girl Scout Troop and 4-H Lepra’s Club—this event welcomes families, neighbors, and volunteers to gather in the heart of Kankakee’s Ward 5 for a day of fun, learning, and connection.
The Kids FunFest was designed to bring children together around the spirit of community development and empowerment. Through the Pop-Up Tent Series model, kids engaged in hands-on gardening activities, colorful craft stations, and interactive demonstrations that highlighted healthy living, food equity, and the importance of nurturing both the earth and each other. Music, games, fresh garden snacks, and educational booths created a lively, festive atmosphere, reminding all in attendance that revitalization isn’t just about beautifying spaces—it’s about planting hope and joy in every corner of our city.
This event was not only a chance to have fun, but also an invitation for our youngest residents to take pride in their neighborhood and to play a role in shaping its future. The laughter of children, the collaboration of volunteers, and the blooming garden beds all served as powerful symbols of what’s possible when a community comes together—growing, sharing, and nourishing a better tomorrow.
