November 17, 2025

KANKAKEE, Illinois - City of Kankakee Fire Deputy Chief Adam Heid has announced his intent to step down from his position within the fire department. DC Heid has served as Deputy Chief for over four years since his promotion on June 7, 2021.

Deputy Chief Heid has chosen to step down from the position to allow more time to attend to his responsibilities and obligations to his family as a husband and father. DC Heid will remain with the Kankakee Fire Department and will return to his previous rank of Captain effective Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Deputy Chief Heid quoted, "I am truly grateful and appreciative for the opportunity and experience to have served as Deputy Fire Chief of the Kankakee Fire Department. Being the Deputy Fire Chief has been both an honor and a privilege, and will forever stand as one of the highlights of my career."

Kankakee Fire Chief Bryan LaRoche commented, "As fire chief, I would like to thank DC Heid for his hard work and leadership that he has shown over his tenure as Deputy Chief. I appreciate the time he has dedicated to making this department better".

Additionally, Mayor Curtis commented, "While DC Heid has stepped down as Deputy Chief and as a part of the city administration team, we are proud that he is remaining with the fire department at the rank of Captain and continuing to be a key member of the fire department. On behalf of myself, the City Council, the city leadership and the community, we thank DC Heid for his dedication and contributions over the last four and half years".

The City of Kankakee will not be immediately naming or appointing a new fire Deputy Chief. The city administration will be meeting in the near future to discuss the next steps and develop a plan for the fire department. Mayor Curtis commented, "The City of Kankakee administration will meet internally to discuss the next steps to maintain the professionalism and continuity of the Kankakee Fire Department and ensure that it will remain one of the best public safety units within the State of Illinois".
