Stefari Cafe has been a beautiful addition to Downtown Kankakee. They are a Coffee Shop with a Light Cafe Food Menu. Items on their menu are locally sourced, health conscious, crafted with love, and community minded! On July 11th the Cafe celebrated their “1st Birthday” and celebrated with their customers (their regulars and new faces)!
The Mayor had the honor of conducting the Kankakee Municipal Band this week at the Don Palzer Bandshell. It was a beautiful night of music and community! Lori Buckman did a fabulous job on her soprano sax solo. Mayor also was able to draw for the Split-the-Pot to raise funds for new instruments for the Band! The Kankakee Municipal Band has FREE concerts at Bird Park every Thursday at 7:00PM through August 9th - come check them out!

The mission of Merchant Street MusicFest is bringing together an eclectic range of music, artists, food and people to celebrate diversity throughout the community. This event is the highlight of the summer for many and we are so grateful for the turn out each year! Thank you to all who worked to make it happen and all who attended!!
The Community Forum was the first public event to launch Kankakee United. Representatives from Cities United led conversations with community members about how we can make Kankakee a safer, healthier, and more hopeful city.
The Cities United and Kankakee United team hosted a lunch to review the information gathered at the Community Forum, identify current gaps in meeting the community’s needs, and hear about successful examples of what is being done in cities across the country to address gun violence involving young African American men and boys.
The City Council meeting on September 4, 2018 included a presentation by Bill Barnes, Director of Community Relations from Duane Dean Behavioral Health Center, a presentation by KPD introducing their new Patrolman, Jose Diaz, and a proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month.
60+ community leaders gathered at the Kankakee YMCA this morning in a conversation on the Opioid Crisis in Kankakee County.The agenda included an overview of current statistics for Kankakee County, conversation about resources currently available, and conversation on what the community could benefit from in the future.
Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong, and special guests Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Congressman Luis Gutierrez, hosted an Immigration Resources Informational Session on Wednesday, September 19th. Topics discussed included: how you can engage your U.S. Representative and federal agencies on immigration issues, Immigration policies at the federal, state, and local levels, your rights, Police-ICE collaboration, and actions taken to empower the Hispanic population in Kankakee.
The Kankakee Fire Department Explorer Post #653 was established in 2017 after much hard work and coordination by principle members Capt. Bryan LaRoche, Capt. Mike Casagrande and FF Daryl Hunt. They observed an underserved need within the community and responded by establishing the post, a first for the Kankakee Fire Department. Many additional members contributed to the success of the program through teaching classes, coordinating events and mentoring the students.
