    City Council, December 17th 2018: The Eastside Bulldogs’ Cheerleading Teams led the City Council in the Pledge of Allegiance. The City of Kankakee also presented a resolution honoring the Kankakee Eastside Bulldogs Junior League Cheerleaders (1st & 2nd grader Widgets, 3rd & 4th grader Peewees, 5th & 6th grader Junior Varsity) on their successful competitions.

    City Council, December 3rd 2018: Grace Christian Academy’s Student Council lead the pledge for City Council. Scott Snavely, Market President at Midland States Bank, presented the Kankakee Police Department with a check and letter for their exceptional work in late October.

  • Mayor at Kankakee Trinity Academy

    Mayor Wells-Armstrong visited Kankakee Trinity Academy’s Elementary School students (Pre-K to 5th Grade) on December 5, 2018. Mayor shared with the students that she is an avid reader and has been since she was a little girl. She encouraged all the children to read as much as they can to help them in school and life. Mayor Wells-Armstrong enjoys these times with children and encourages her Kankakee schools to reach out to schedule times for her to come visit! You can always go to the City of Kankakee website to submit an “Invite the Mayor” form, or call Mayor Wells-Armstrong’s office at (815)933-0500 during regular business hours to schedule.

  • 12th Annual Lion Wreathing & Tree Lighting

    The City of Kankakee celebrated the start of the Holiday Season with the 12th Annual Lion Wreathing at the Kankakee Public Library. Mayor Wells-Armstrong chose two children through a drawing in the KPL, then headed out to wreath Readmore and Seemore the lions. The Kankakee High School Drumline escorted the crowd to the Kankakee Depo. for the official Tree Lighting. The evening was a great way to usher in the season and also included a visit from Santa Claus, carols sung by the Kankakee High School choir, and cookies and hot chocolate in the Depo!

  • A Taste of Winter

    Once the fog cleared, the views in the City of Kankakee were beautiful. It did not take a full snowfall to create a beautiful winter scene in Kankakee.

  • Kankakee County Mayors' Association

    Kankakee County Mayors’ Association meets on a regular basis to join together in addressing Regional issues. At the January 16th meeting Jim Rowe, our State’s Attorney, spoke to the Mayors’ Association about updates in his office regarding convictions, partnering with local municipalities and working with the police departments. He also spoke of JUMP, a new mentoring program Kankakee County out of the State’s Attorney’s Office.

    On Thursday, October 25th, HMC: Hippocrates Medical Clinic had their official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Mayor Wells-Armstrong was proud to see the clinic re-open this fall, knowing that HMC is making a strong impact on the Kankakee community.   • Asbury of Kankakee

    Asbury of Kankakee Supportive Living programs is part of the Illinois Supportive Living Program. This program is designed to promote independence, dignity, respect and well-being for residents in a cost-effective manner. The Court Street facility finished Phase I of their renovations and had their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on October 24th.

    City Council, October 16, 2018: Members of the Kankakee NAACP Youth Council lead the pledge for City Council. After receiving a letter from a student concerned for the safety of his peers at the King Middle School on Court Street, Mayor Wells-Armstrong and Kankakee City Engineer searched for options to improve safety in this area. The City Council members voted in favor of submitting a grant application to IDOT for the Safe Routes to School Grant.

    August 8, 2018: The Cities United and Kankakee United team hosted a lunch to review the information gathered at the Community Forum, identify current gaps in meeting the community’s needs, and hear about successful examples of what is being done in cities across the country to address gun violence involving young African American men and boys.

    On Thursday, April 12, 2018, Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong honored four local students selected as the recipients of the inaugural African American Civic Leaders Scholarship.


    Kankakee Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong delivered her first State of the City Address yesterday evening to a packed crowd at the Kankakee Public Library.

    The speech focused on the unique set of challenges facing Kankakee and the priorities of the Mayor in the coming months and year.

    The Mayor had the honor of conducting the Kankakee Municipal Band this week at the Don Palzer Bandshell. It was a beautiful night of music and community! Lori Buckman did a fabulous job on her soprano sax solo. Mayor also was able to draw for the Split-the-Pot to raise funds for new instruments for the Band! The Kankakee Municipal Band has FREE concerts at Bird Park every Thursday at 7:00PM through August 9th - come check them out!

    The Kankakee Fire Department Explorer Post #653 was established in 2017 after much hard work and coordination by principle members Capt. Bryan LaRoche, Capt. Mike Casagrande and FF Daryl Hunt. They observed an underserved need within the community and responded by establishing the post, a first for the Kankakee Fire Department. Many additional members contributed to the success of the program through teaching classes, coordinating events and mentoring the students.

    Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong, and special guests Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Congressman Luis Gutierrez, hosted an Immigration Resources Informational Session on Wednesday, September 19th. Topics discussed included: how you can engage your U.S. Representative and federal agencies on immigration issues, Immigration policies at the federal, state, and local levels, your rights, Police-ICE collaboration, and actions taken to empower the Hispanic population in Kankakee.

    City Council, October 1, 2018: Members of MBS Childcare Center and youth from Open Bible Center lead the pledge for City Council. Deputy Chief Willie Hunt introduced new Patrolman, Daniel L. Deckard to City Council, and Kankakee Police Department (KPD) was presented with their accreditation through the State of Illinois accreditation program ILEAP. City A group of undergraduate Social Work students from Trinity Christian College attended City Council as a part of their studies of policy in social work.
