Melissa W. King serves as the Director of Planning & Zoning for the City of Kankakee, bringing over 15 years of extensive experience in both the private and public sectors of design, construction, and planning. Melissa holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a specialization in Horticultural Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Florida.

Before joining the City of Kankakee, Melissa was the Director of Planning & Zoning for the Village of Homer Glen, and she has also held various planning positions in Homer Glen and the Village of Orland Park. In her role with the City of Kankakee, Melissa is responsible for enforcing the zoning code, implementing changes to the code, overseeing development and permit reviews, and spearheading long-range planning initiatives. As the staff liaison to the Planning Board, she guides applicants through the public meeting process for zoning changes.

Melissa is deeply committed to public service and is dedicated to finding innovative solutions that benefit residents, business owners, and property owners. Her expertise and passion for planning ensure that Kankakee continues to grow and thrive in a thoughtful and strategic manner.
