As part of its commitment to public engagement, the City of Kankakee is seeking input from City residents for the use of the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Funds. Signed into law by President Biden in March 2021, the ARP has provided funding to states, local governments, and other entities to help replace lost revenues, cover COVID-related expenses, and reverse the economic impacts of this pandemic. The City of Kankakee was allocated approximately $14.6 million as part of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

The city is projected to face significant revenue impacts due to the pandemic that will require the use of the American Recovery Plan funding as it strives to reimagine its workspaces and workforce for a post-pandemic world. Beyond this much-needed relief for fiscal stress and operations, the stimulus package will set aside money to ensure we get resources where they are needed to restart the City of Kankakee, reopen businesses, assist tenants and landlords and strengthen our social agencies.

While we await more detailed funding guidelines from the federal government, we are beginning to plan for the use of ARP funds as part of our budget development process. Below are some priorities identified by the City Council. Please provide feedback by checking the categories most important to you, or adding others. We will review all comments to address community priorities.

    • Youth engagement programs, recreation, and parks.
    • Safe and livable neighborhoods.
    • Job creation and economic development.
    • Green and healthy housing.
    • Avoiding cuts to city services.
    • Public Safety.

Feedback is essential to ensure that ARP discretionary funds are used in the most impactful way for our community. For that reason, Mayor Curtis is looking to hear the voices of the residents of the City of Kankakee. The final report that is prepared will ultimately help guide the City of Kankakee and its City Council on how best to allocate resources for pandemic recovery.

Thank you in advance for making your voice heard in this important effort.
