Position Details

The Kankakee Police Department is actively seeking experienced Police Officers and Certified part-time Police Officers for immediate lateral entry. Certified part-time police officers will be hired full-time and be required to attend the first available transition academy.

The Kankakee Police Department serves the citizens of Kankakee, Illinois, a community of approximately 26,000 residents and is located 60 miles south of Chicago. The Police Department generates and responds to over 65,000 calls for service every year.

Applicant Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Be a certified Illinois Police Officer, or a Certified part-time Illinois Police Officer or Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified in accordance with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB). All applicants and certifications must be current.
  • Education – High school education or equivalent thereof
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License
  • All lateral applications shall not have attained the age of 36 by the date of appointment except as otherwise provided by statute. Proof of date of birth will be required at time of application

Applicant Selection Process:

  • Complete an oral interview with the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
  • Successfully complete a background investigation
  • Successfully complete a psychological evaluation
  • Successfully complete a medical evaluation
  • And any other qualifications deemed necessary by the BOFPC
