Kankakee Fire Department Capt. Jeff Bruno was promoted Monday to deputy fire chief, becoming second in command of the department.
A Kankakee firefighter since December 1990, the 51-year-old Bruno was appointed lieutenant in August 2009 and then to the rank of captain in May 2015. He had been serving as interim assistant chief since January.
Bruno is a 1984 graduate of Bishop McNamara Catholic High School, and served in the U.S. Army from 1984-90. He is currently working toward a bachelor's degree in public safety management from Southern Illinois University.
Bruno's responsibilities as Deputy Chief will include will revolve personnel and equipment maintenance issues, as well as serving as the chief when that person is temporary absent or disabled.
In addition to serving as a firefighter, Bruno also served as a Kankakee District 111 school board member in 1997 and 2001.
