RESOURCES FOR FLOODING VICTIMS

February 25, 2018

KANKAKEE – Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong has released the following statement regarding the status on flooding in the area.

“The City continues to work with the Director of Emergency Management for Kankakee County and other community partners to address the impact of the flooding.  If you are not able to stay in your home, please contact the American Red Cross at 877.597.0747 for shelter options.

Because the detainees have been the only designated group preparing sand bags, in case there is an additional need, bags and sand will be available at Fire Station 3 on West Water Street by 12pm; however, residents will have to make their own bags.

I have contacted the Kankakee Valley Park District for assistance and the Executive Director has established donation sites for cleaning supplies until 8pm this evening at the Rec Center.  Donations can be dropped off tomorrow from 8:30am to 4:30pm at Bird Park. More information regarding a schedule for picking up supplies is forthcoming.

Coordination with the DPW and Republic Allied is underway to address waste removal in the coming days.  Additionally, the City Engineer has spoken with IDOT and the Washington Street Bridge will remain closed for the next 24 hours due to strong water currents splashing against the steel superstructure.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on available resources for the community."

For more information contact the Mayor's office at 815-933-0500.
