CITY OF KANKAKEE SELECTED BY CITIES UNITED FOR ANTI-VIOLENCE INITIATIVE

May 29, 2018

KANKAKEE – A nationwide organization of mayors dedicated to ending violence among African-American men and boys has selected the City of Kankakee to receive resources, training and assistance in implementing a public safety plan.

The organization, titled Cities United, was founded in 2011 by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in an effort to bring together cities to reduce homicides in half by 2025.

“Cities United represents a collaborative approach to reducing violence in our communities by working with local organizations on implementing proven strategies that work,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong. “Teaming with cities from across the nation will offer the City of Kankakee invaluable experience and expertise in dealing with violence that is unfortunately too common in our neighborhoods.”

Cities United works with communities by identifying regional issues and developing comprehensive, innovative solutions to decrease violence. The organization assisted New Orleans in developing its “NOLA for Life” program that aggressively targeted gang members while also giving those who wanted to turn their lives around the resources and support needed.

“Our young African-American boys and men need to know that they are valued and that we are taking steps to address violent crime that disproportionately affects young men of color,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong. “I am thrilled about the potential benefit this collaboration will bring to the City of Kankakee throughout this year and for years to come.”

The organization is currently composed of approximately 100 mayors from across the nation, including the Illinois communities of University Park, Evanston, North Chicago, Chicago, Springfield and East St. Louis.
