City of Kankakee Votes to Move Forward with West River Street Purchases

August 21, 2019

Kankakee, IL – During Monday night’s city council meeting, the city council voted 13-0 and Alderman Tyler Tall (D-5) voted present to move forward with two purchase contracts for two tax delinquent properties located on West River Street.

“Being able to acquire these two properties which have impact on the larger scale project is very important as we work to move Kankakee Forward,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

The properties are located on 260 West River Street and 380 West River Street and will be purchased through the Kankakee County Trustee at $847 for each property. Both locations will be a part of the Kankakee Riverfront Master Plan to develop the Kankakee Riverwalk. Hitchcock Design Group is taking the lead on planning and architecture.

“The City’s acquisition of 260 West River Street is outstanding news! It’s one of the first pieces that will be constructed for the Kankakee Riverwalk. It also enables City leaders, in partnership with other Riverwalk advocates, to advance the design and construction of a critically important segment of the downtown Riverwalk, which in turn, will spark business and residential investment in the area,” said founder and senior principal, Rick Hitchcock of Hitchcock Design Group.

The Kankakee Riverfront will be the highlight as a main attraction to promote the city as a premier Illinois riverfront community.
