Kankakee, IL – Staff from The United States Census Bureau will be on site tomorrow at Kankakee Workforce Services in Bradley to assist those who are interested in applying for jobs. Census takers are needed for the 2020 Census. The Census is a mandated count of the population in the United States that takes place every 10 years. The results affect your voice in government, how much funding the State of Illinois and the City of Kankakee receives, as well as, how the City plans to utilize funds for the future.

Recruiter Assistant for The U.S. Census, Michelle Campana, stated “The U.S. Census has been reaching out to Kankakee County to fill positions for local administrative jobs and survey takers. We believe no one knows their own city like those who live there! U.S. Census wants to make sure that our neighbors and local leaders are the ones who knock on the doors to get these surveys completed. We are also hiring managers and supervisors for these positions, as well as, a need for those who can translate languages.”

Those interested are invited to join a Census Bureau Field recruiter tomorrow at Kankakee Workforce Services from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. for assistance and additional information. Additionally, there are implications tied to population thresholds and a municipality’s ability to maintain local control in terms of governance. We want to make sure that we count every resident so that we can meet the needs of our evolving community,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

"The data collected from the Census provides our community with much more than just a population count. The Census is collecting data that other organizations use to decide where to build new stores or market new products too. The state and federal government use the Census data to decide where to distribute their dollars for various programs. If Kankakee is counted incorrectly, the data will be skewed and the dollars allocated to help improve our infrastructure and housing initiatives or our demand for business growth will be affected,” said Economic and Community Development Agency Executive Director, Barbi Brewer-Watson.
The U.S. Census Bureau will join more than a dozen other local employers at the Illinois Department of Employment Security’s job fair on Thursday, October 24, 2019. The job fair will be held at Kankakee Workforce Services from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Applicants must have their resume posted in Illinois Job Link prior to attending the job fair, but are also encouraged to have them on hand.
