City of Kankakee Leaf Schedule Update

City of Kankakee Leaf Schedule Update

November 14, 2019

Kankakee, IL – The early arrival of winter weather will have an impact on the City of Kankakee’s leaf pick-up program. Much of the equipment, specifically trucks, used for leaf collection is also used for snow removal. In order to be prepared for snow events, the Department of Public Works stated that it has been necessary to convert some trucks over a little earlier. This has reduced the amount of equipment that is available for leaf pick-up. Street sweepers do not work effectively in sub-freezing temps and snow which is also an important part of their effort. Frozen conditions make picking up leaves very difficult and slows down the operation. This is also occurring at the height of the City’s leaf pick-up program.

Effective immediately through December 1, 2019, the department will continue daily pick-up. Under the circumstances, the department will not expect to complete each area on regular trash days. Each day crews will resume pick-up where they left off on the previous day. Additionally, Republic Services will complete bag and toter collection on December 1, 2019 and will not resume until April 15, 2020.  No bags will be collected after that date.

In previous years, crews did continue pick-up leading into the month of December.  While it is their hope to finish the cleanup, a severe winter storm will require them to convert the remainder of the trucks. Timely leaf pick-up will not be possible at that point.   Residents are encouraged to complete yard clean ups at their first opportunity as the program may be discontinued earlier than expected. The City of Kankakee and the Department of Public Works appreciates everyone’s corporation.
