Kankakee Police Officers Set to Participate in 28th Annual “Shop with a Cop”

Kankakee, IL – On December 15, 2019 the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Kankakee Police Department and other police agencies will host the 28th annual “Shop with a Cop.” More than 74 officers will be participating this year, including 10 officers from the City of Kankakee. This will be the first year for Officer Mario Martinez who was sworn in earlier this Fall.

“I have always looked forward to doing things like this as a police officer. It’s a great way to be positively involved with the youth from the community. I appreciate the opportunity to give back and I can’t wait to see the joy on the kid’s faces,” said Officer Mario Martinez.

Ninety children will be participating in “Shop with a Cop” and will start the day with breakfast at McDonalds with their assigned police officers. They will then head over to Meijer where they will choose the gifts they desire to bring home.

“It’s a great time to bring some joy to the kids and their families. We find that most of the time the kids don’t always get things for themselves. They often pick out things for their family members. It’s more than just taking the child out and treating them to a fun day. It’s lasting memories because when they see us again in the community, they always remember Shop with a Cop,” Commander Donell Austin.

“Building meaningful relationships with our law enforcement community is important. It is good to partner with their cop for the day which will always leave a lasting impression. It’s good to see the community come together for such a great cause over the years,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

The children will also receive goodie bags and a Christmas food basket to take home for their families.
