Schuyler Avenue Streetscape Plan: New String Lights

January 13, 2020

Kankakee, IL – Schuyler Avenue will be getting additional string lights starting this week. The upgrade is a part of the Schuyler Avenue Streetscape Plan which kicked off downtown revitalization efforts during the Summer of 2018. The lighting project will begin at the 100 Block of North Schuyler Avenue. Each block will be closed off at a time while crews work on installation.

“Light, bright and fun are all words that describe the new Schuyler Avenue Streetscape which integrates three creative forms of lighting. Decorative street lights are provided to address basic roadway safety issues, while decorative pier lighting adds a historic and bright flare. Festoon lights strung across the roadway definitely add elements of fun and excitement to the area,” said City Planner and Vice President/Principal of Teska Associates, Mike Hoffman.

“Improving our downtown district is just a start as we aim to enhance the beauty of our City and attract newcomers. The string lighting will be a great addition to brighten the area as we plan for upcoming events,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

Other additions to Schuyler Avenue include the completed bike lanes, new light poles, outdoor seating, plants and sidewalk improvements. The project was funded through the downtown TIF.
