March 10, 2020

Kankakee, IL – City of Kankakee Economic and Community Development Agency (ECDA) will hold public hearings for the purpose of receiving comments from the citizens of the City of Kankakee regarding the HUD, Community Development Block Grant, and Public Service. Public hearings will be in the format of a Community Needs Assessment Forum to discuss the needs in the community and the capacity of ECDA to address those needs. The City of Kankakee will also address the national objectives required in the expenditure of HUD funding. The three national objectives are (1) activities benefiting low to moderate income persons, (2) the prevention or elimination of slums and blight and, (3) meeting urgent need.

These public hearings are intended as an opportunity to hear the community’s feedback on the ECDA’s project funding. The public and representatives of low to moderate income constituents’ organizations are encouraged to attend. All public hearings will all be held at 6:00 p.m. on the following days and locations: Wednesday, March 11th at the ECDA Conference Room, 200 E. Court Street, Suite 410; Friday, March 13th at Life Compass Church, 175 S. Wall Street; Wednesday, March 18th at the Kankakee Area YMCA, 1075 Kennedy Drive; and Thursday, March 19th at the Youth For Christ City Life Center, 1820 E. Court Street.

“The city has held public hearings in the past when announcing federally funded project goals, however this year we are holding more meetings and visiting residents in their neighborhoods to learn how they think  the money should be allocated throughout the city,” stated Executive Director, Barbi Brewer-Watson.  “We did an electronic survey towards the end of the year last year and now we are holding in person meetings to dig deeper and learn residents’ thoughts on community development.”

“Holding public hearings will give our residents an opportunity to share their input and help the City prioritize the issues that are impacting neighborhoods. Our Economic and Community Development Agency is working daily to help address those needs,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.
