April 08, 2020

Kankakee, IL – Upon learning of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) at Shapiro Developmental Center, Mayor Wells-Armstrong is reaching out to state legislators to further address the needs and concerns of the employees who are working on the front lines to care for their residents at the mental health residential facility. Mayor Wells-Armstrong drafted a letter for State Senator Patrick Joyce and State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst.

“I am on a weekly call that Governor Pritzker hosts for mayors across the state and I know he is working hard to meet the needs of all Illinoisans during this pandemic. As I continue to look for resources, I hope to collaborate on this matter with our state legislators in an effort to keep our community safe,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

Several employees at Shapiro reached out to Mayor Wells-Armstrong addressing their concerns, specifically a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). Shapiro is one of the largest employers in the City of Kankakee with more than 1,000 employees and 500 residents. There are at least a dozen confirmed cases of COVID-19.
