Kankakee, IL – Food pantries nationwide continue to see an increase for the need, especially during this time. Mayor Wells-Armstrong is partnering with local grocery stores, Jewel-Osco and Berkot’s Super Foods in Kankakee, to host a food drive for Kankakee County Community Services, Inc (KCCSI).

“Hunger does not take a vacation, especially during a pandemic. We will continue to help those in the community. More specifically, we are seeing a shortage on meat and it’s throughout the country. If you purchase meat, you can drop it off at our KCCSI location at 657 East Court Street in Kankakee from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please call 815-933-7883 ext.212 for arrangements for drop-off. We would also like to thank Mayor Wells-Armstrong and our local grocery stores for their efforts and support,” said Executive Director, Vincent Clark.

Currently, KCCSI is distributing pre-packaged food boxes that are prepared by staff which include can goods, dairy products and a selection of available meat. Fruits and vegetables are also highly encouraged and can be dropped off at KCCSI.

Non-perishable food items for the food drive will be collected beginning Friday, May 15, 2020 through Friday, June 5, 2020 at three locations:

Jewel-Osco – 446 S. Washington Avenue, Kankakee

Berkot’s Super Foods – 1557 W. Court Street, Kankakee

Donald E. Green Public Safety Building – 385 E. Oak Street, Kankakee

Collection bins will be placed in the entry way of each building.

“I would like to thank Jewel-Osco and Berkot’s Super Foods for partnering with the City of Kankakee during this critical time. I am encouraging everyone that is in a position to support this effort to do so. Every item helps and thinking about those in need while grocery shopping will be greatly appreciated,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

Kankakee County Community Services, Inc (KCCSI) is looking to hire additional help for their food pantry, specifically high school or college students interested in a part-time position that pays $10 an hour. Those who are interested are encouraged to send a resume to aharper@kccsi-cap.org or by mail to 657 East Court Street, Kankakee, IL 60901.
