Kankakee, IL – Today, Kankakee police joined law enforcement officers in the community to honor all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. A proclamation was signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 to designate May 15th as “Peace Officers Memorial Day.” Events, initiatives and memorial dedications take place across the nation to honor officers in what is now known as “National Police Week.”

A ceremony was held at the Kankakee County Courthouse for the posting of the wreath at the police memorial.

“Although the current medical crisis has forced the cancellation of most of the ceremonies of National Police Week, the service and sacrifices of past law enforcement officers, particularly those who have lost their lives, will always be remembered and appreciated by the public and by current officers. The Kankakee Police Department especially commemorates Kankakee Patrolmen August Dickman, George Lezotte Sr., Robert Hart and Anthony Samfay who each paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving the community,” said Police Chief Frank Kosman.         

“I would like to express my gratitude to our officers for taking on such a vital role in our community. We honor those lost today as and remember the impact of their legacies on our community,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

The Kankakee Police Department continues to maintain the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) which is a trademark that defines the gold standard in public safety.
