Mayor Wells-Armstrong Awards Students with the African American Civic Leaders’ Scholarship

Kankakee, IL – Five young men and women have been chosen by the committee for Mayor Wells-Armstrong’s African American Civic Leaders’ Scholarship. Each recipient will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 per student.

The following recipients are as follows: 

KeMia Smith who will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a major in chemistry.  She is seeking to become a chemical engineer.

De’Asia Love who will be attending Southern University and A&M College with a major in chemistry.  She is seeking to become a pharmacist.

Janae Fleming who will be attending Kentucky State University with a major in business administration and a specialization in accounting.

Curtis Smith who will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a major in electrical engineering.

Joe Martin who will be attending Kankakee Community College and transferring to Illinois State University with a major in graphic design.

“I would like to congratulate all of the students as they have worked extremely hard toward their accomplishments. Pursuant to COVID 19 guidelines, if it is permissible to host a gathering, I will schedule a ceremony before the students leave the area for college. I wish all students much success on their journeys and want to remind them they are supported by their community. Additionally, I want to acknowledge the support of community partners and leaders who contributed funds toward the scholarships and made investments in our youth,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

Mayor Wells-Armstrong awards scholarships based on academics, positive leadership and community involvement. No taxpayer funds are utilized for the scholarships.
