Kankakee, IL – City Council approved the annual budget 8-6 for the fiscal year beginning May 1, 2020 through April 30, 2021 during Monday night’s City Council meeting.

Alderman Fred Tetter (D-7), Alderman Carl Brown (D-7), Alderman Mike Cobbs (D-6), Alderwoman Carmen Lewis (D-5), Alderwoman Danita Swanson (R-4), Alderwoman Stacy Gall (D-2), Cherry Malone Marshall (D-1), and Alderman Mike Prude (D-1) approved the budget.

Alderman Chris Curtis (R-6), Alderman Tyler Tall (D-5), Alderman Faford (R-4), Alderman David Crawford (R-3), Alderman Larry A. Osenga (R-3), and Alderman Mike O’Brien (D-2) voted against the budget.

“Passing the balanced budget with a surplus during the time of a pandemic speaks to the diligence of the team. Though we continue to navigate the pandemic, it is important to have a budget in place to provide stability for our municipality as it relates to services our community relies on daily. Additionally, with the passage of the budget the City can refinance bonds and save hundreds of thousands of dollars for taxpayers while accessing funding for capital projects including equipment for our public safety departments. The City is working on a number of  projects which will have significant impact and improve the quality of life for our residents, business owners and visitors.  The vote last night allows us to continue our focus on moving Kankakee Forward,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.
