August 19, 2020

Kankakee, IL – The City of Kankakee is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $1.8 million dollars for the Fast-Track Capital Grant. Governor Pritzker announced today that Kankakee joins the list of more than a dozen cities across the state where $24.8 million in funding has been allocated to jumpstart capital projects from the Fast-Track Public Infrastructure Capital Program.

According to a press release from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), $14.7 million has been allocated for projects located in opportunity zones. Funding is supported by the Rebuild Illinois capital plan and will be used to accelerate shovel-ready projects in underserved communities throughout the state.

“Investment aimed toward building modern infrastructure and fostering stronger and better-connected communities are at the center of our historic $45 billion capital plan. While COVID-19 continues to present extraordinary economic challenges, our planned infrastructure projects should not have to wait,” said Governor Pritzker.

“I am very appreciative to Governor Pritzker for prioritizing capital funds during the COVID -19 pandemic. Not only do these funds support infrastructure projects, but they create jobs. Furthermore, this administration will continue to move Kankakee Forward by pursuing every opportunity for funding and addressing equity in our community as we target areas in the City which have experienced divestment during the last several decades. A special thanks to our City Engineer, Neil Piggush, for leading this team with preparing the grant application and to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) for believing in our vision,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

“This grant will assist the City in providing better accessibility and investment into historically underserved areas of the City while continuing the enhancement of downtown in accordance with its previously adopted 2015 Bike Plan. This project will also provide better access to the proposed Metro Bus Transfer Station which will also be slated for construction in late 2020 through early 2021,” said City Engineer, Neil Piggush.
