Kankakee, IL – Four decades serving the community with the Kankakee Fire Department is the latest accomplishment for Firefighter James H. Stokes Jr. who will be retiring today.

Stokes began his career with the fire department in 1981, but actually started out as an emergency medical technician (EMT) in 1979. Stokes worked as an emergency room EMT for AMITA Health St. Mary’s Hospital before becoming a firefighter. He credits all of his years to his commitment to the residents in Kankakee.

“I enjoy what I do, but I am ready to embrace retirement. To do this type of work you have to show love for one another and take care of each other. We will always continue to serve the community no matter where our paths may take us,” said Firefighter James Stokes.

Stokes also highlights being the founder of the “Kankakee Kids in Action” program which allowed youth to volunteer who wanted to make a difference in the community. Stokes was also an alderman for the second ward from 2011 to 2015.

“We appreciate the longevity and service to the public. He has maintained a great work ethic and we wish him well in retirement,” said Fire Chief Damon Schuldt.

“I would like to congratulate Mr. Stokes on his retirement. Forty years in the fire service is a milestone. It truly shows his dedication and commitment to our community,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.
