Women’s Wednesday: Supporting Women Owned Businesses in Downtown Kankakee

March 17, 2021

Kankakee, IL – In honor of Women’s History Month, today kicks off the first Women’s Wednesday in the Burfield & Remington building, formerly known as the Majestic Theater, in downtown Kankakee.

Each week, women owned businesses and vendors will be featured, an idea spearheaded by local business owner, Christy Smith.

“I think it’s really important to keep showing support to small business owners, especially following the pandemic. The goal is a fresh start in 2021. When you arrive for Women’s Wednesday, some will be informational vendors while others will be selling their products,” said Christy Smith, Owner of DressWell Boutique, E.volve Clothing Company and Clothing Bar. “I love to collaborate with other business owners because there are so many amazing women who are small business owners, as well as community leaders. I thought this would be a great way to showcase everyone and encourage more growth during Women’s History Month.”

“While Women’s History Month remains a milestone worldwide, I am proud to see our very own women being celebrated locally, one of the reasons why I also started the Phenomenal Woman Awards. Women have and continue to make significant contributions in our society and in this community. Women uplift the voices of the voiceless, advocate for equal rights, protect the vulnerable, and even become successful entrepreneurs. Women’s Wednesday is a great opportunity to meet and support the women in our community all in one location,” said Mayor Wells-Armstrong.

Women Wednesday will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, March 17, 2021
  • Wednesday, March 24, 2021
  • Wednesday, March 31, 2021

Two local businesses recently opened their doors in the Burfield & Remington building, both of which are woman-owned. Sprinkled with Glitter is a children’s boutique located on the first floor. A new tattoo shop, Electric Lady Lounge, is now open for business on the second floor, and is the only woman-owned tattoo shop in Kankakee County.
