ECDA AND KFD HOSTING FIRE SAFETY EVENT FOR KIDS THIS SATURDAY

March 15, 2022

KANKAKEE, Ill. (March 15, 2022) – This Saturday, March 19th, 2022 the Economic and Community Development Agency along with the Kankakee Fire Department will be hosting a Fire Safety Event for kids. Children and their families are invited to come learn important fire safety lessons, play games, and meet Sparky at the KVPD Recreation Center located at 150 N Indiana Ave in Kankakee. Prizes will be raffled off to young participants.

KFD Chief Laroche encourages all residents to make fire safety a priority in their homes.  "It is important for everyone in the family to understand and learn fire safety,” he says. “Especially in the kitchen. Kitchen fires make up 49% of house fires."  The City team hopes that by teaching fire safety through an event like this, they can reduce the chances of fire events in Kankakee homes.

Some of the prizes participants can win at this event include a family pleaser from Monical’s Pizza, two movie passes from Classic Cinemas, and three young residents could win a bicycle donated by Project Re:Cycle.

“As part of our housing programs at ECDA, we want to provide interactive educational opportunities, where families can learn how to create healthier and safer homes.” States ECDA Director Brewer-Watson. “Learning about stove safety, creating a fire safety plan, and installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are just some of the items that we need to remind residents to take more seriously within their homes.  We hope that this event provides that reminder but in a fun and engaging way.”
