Press release from the Kankakee Fire Department and Kankakee Police Department
For Immediate Release

At approximately 3:08 pm on July 16, 2024 the Kankakee City Fire and Police departments were notified of a possible drowning on the Kankakee River near the Beckman Park boat launch. The initial report was of a 6-year-old male in the river. On the fire and police departments arrival, there were multiple civilians attempting to locate a victim. As the witnesses attempted to get to the victim, the male subject went under the water and never resurfaced.


The Kankakee Fire and Police departments were by rescue boats from Aroma Fire department, Limestone Fire department and Bourbonnais Fire department. Kankakee County Sherriff’s deputies and Illinois State Police also assisted in the search. Resources from the MABAS 15 Division water rescue team were called in to assist with locating the victim. Assistance was also received from a civilian boater who is familiar with the Kankakee River.


At approximately 5:22 pm a victim was found near the area boat launch where he was last seen, about 25 feet from shore. The depth of the water was approximately 10 feet. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Kankakee County Coroner’s office.


The details of the drowning are being investigated by the Kankakee County Coroner’s office.
